The Amish had their beginnings in 1693 in the Swiss & South Rhine Valley. However, their background goes back to the Protestant Reformation.

Like similar groups that came out of the Reformation, the Amish were persecuted because of their Anabaptist beliefs. Eventually they were driven out of Europe and migrated to North America like many other persecuted people. In spite of this they grew as a group, and today they continue to grow.
